Today is Veterans Day (previously called Armistice Day). In 1919, President Woodrow Wilson declared November 11 as a day to honor veterans with these words:
To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…
November 11 is the anniversary of the armistice that became effective on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, which halted fighting during World War I, even though the war did not officially end until June 28, 1919.
Armistice Day was started to honor those that served in World War I. Because of the wars the followed World War I, Armistice Day was changed to Veterans Day to honor American veterans of all wars.
Please join RCRT in remembering, celebrating, and thanking all of our veterans and those that are currently serving in our military for helping to keep America the land of the free.
